✿ A Silent Voice – Movie Review
(。◕‿◕。)➜ Official movie poster of A Silent Voice (2016), via IMDb.
🌸 Introduction
A Silent Voice is a Japanese animated film directed by Naoko Yamada. The film explores the serious issue of bullying in schools and its long-term emotional impact on students. It tells the story of Shoya Ishida, a boy who once bullied his deaf classmate, Shoko Nishimiya, and later struggles to correct his mistakes. The movie highlights important educational values such as empathy, responsibility, and the power of second chances.
❥ Story Summary
The story begins with Shoya Ishida, a careless and immature boy who bullies Shoko Nishimiya after she transfers to his school. Because Shoko is deaf, she becomes an easy target, and many classmates join Shoya in teasing her. However, when the situation becomes serious, Shoya is blamed and eventually becomes isolated from his classmates.
Years later, filled with guilt and regret, Shoya decides to find Shoko and seek forgiveness. The film then follows his journey of redemption, emotional growth, and self-realization as he tries to rebuild relationships and become a better person.
❥ Educational Perspective
The movie strongly reflects the reality of bullying in schools and how it affects students emotionally and mentally. It also shows how teachers sometimes fail to properly manage bullying situations and how classmates influence each other’s behavior.
The film teaches that education is not only about academic knowledge but also about empathy, kindness, and understanding others. It emphasizes the importance of emotional education and creating a supportive school environment where every student feels valued and respected.
❥ Personal Response
While watching the movie, I experienced mixed emotions, including sympathy, sadness, and hope. Shoya’s character development impressed me the most. In the beginning, he acts without thinking and prioritizes himself, believing he is always right. However, as he grows older, he becomes more thoughtful, often blaming himself and trying to prioritize others. This change clearly shows his guilt and emotional growth.
Shoko’s character teaches important values such as patience and forgiveness. Despite facing bullying, she remains kind and soft-hearted. Her strength lies in her ability to forgive and continue caring for others.
One of the most powerful scenes for me is when Shoya desperately calls out Shoko’s name while trying to save her. In that moment, his voice expresses deep pain, regret, and guilt. I consider this the emotional peak of the film. Another meaningful scene is during the school festival when Shoya struggles to make eye contact with others, and Shoko gently holds his hand to support him. This scene beautifully shows their mutual understanding and emotional connection.
🌸 Conclusion
In conclusion, A Silent Voice is not just an animated film but a meaningful lesson about empathy, responsibility, and emotional growth. It reminds us that our actions can deeply affect others and that everyone deserves a second chance. The movie connects education with humanity, showing that true learning includes kindness, understanding, and self-reflection. It is a film that every student should watch to understand the importance of compassion in school life.
